Potty training dogs can be hard work, especially if you have recently gotten yourself a new puppy, but there are plenty of tips and advice that will help you to learn how you can teach your dog or puppy to use the ‘potty.’ Dogs are very different to train than other animals than cats; you cannot just put down a litter tray and expect a dog to know what to do. You have to potty train your dog, teach him and ease him into going in the right place.
Here are a few tips to help you get started in potty training your dog:
#1. Never shout at your dog for peeing on the carpet or making a mess, this will only make the dog feel bad and he will not really understand what he has done, other than the fact that you are shouting at him. If your dog does go to the toilet where he shouldn’t, then you should take him to the place where you do want him to go. Show him.
#2 Never rub your dog’s nose in his mess, this is an age old method that many people use, but contrary to what people believe, this is not a good way to potty train your dog, it will only confuse him and make him scared of you.
#3 Always praise your dog when he does go to the toilet in the correct place- make a fuss of him, call him a good boy and if you have a treat on hand then you should reward him for his good behavior. Dogs respond well to praise and if you reward him for going to the toilet in the right place, then he will know if he wants a treat again then he has to go to the toilet in the right place.
#4 Invest in some training pads if you have a new puppy, this works in the same way as a litter tray does for a cat. They are basically waterproof sheets which you can place somewhere in the house for your dog to use if they are not ready to venture outside. If your puppy or dog misses the pad, simply pick him up and place him on the pad. Do not shout at him.
